Is This Meme Racist?
There was a lengthy discussion on Grammarly's page on Facebook over whether this image was racist against segments of the population. Is it appropriate in regard to dialect? Or inappropriate in regard to grammar?
There are people who think ain't and y'all shouldn't be accepted either. I don't think the meme is racist. I also don't have a problem with slang and dialect. I think it spices up the language.
Only racist if you've never worked for a variety of people and are dumb enough to think only 'certain' poeple say this word incorrectly. Case in point: An Everyone Loves Raymond, episode centered on how Raymond could not say the word Ask correctly.
It's interesting. This is a word I use on purpose. Not cause I'm making fun of it, I just like how "ax" sounds as opposed to "ask."
ReplyDeleteIt does sound cool :-)
DeleteIt's "ask". If you chose to use "ax" you're choosing to sound stupid. Stupidity is raceless.
ReplyDeleteSo it shouldn't get the same acceptance as ya'all, ain't and other such words?

Agreed :-)
DeleteI say ax sometimes by mistake but I have no problem with any kind of slang word or phrase. I think these words and phrases are creative.
ReplyDeleteOr have deeper, historical roots we shouldn't toss aside.
DeleteNot racist...fucking funny though
ReplyDeleteYeah. You should've seen the anger on Facebook though. You'd think someone had donned a clan hood by the way things blew up.

I've heard people say "yous" or "warsh" or "liberry" and they weren't one 'pacific' race. I concur with Shauna.
ReplyDeleteFacebook really isn't the place to be determining anything of substance.
